Liceu Velho is a building in the eastern part of the city centre of Mindelo, Cape Verde. Constructed between 1859 and 1873, the building was intended to serve as military barracks, the Quartel Militar.[4] It was a residence of the Portuguesecolonial governor of Cape Verde.[5]:127 In 1921 the was installed in the building, making Mindelo the centre of education of Cape Verde.[5]:82 The school was closed in 1937, and reopened the same year as Liceu Gil Eanes.[4] After 1968, when this school moved to a new building, it housed the .[5]:127
